Ladies Match Cup: Heavy gusts made up for spectacular manoeuvres on the second day of racing on Lake Constance
Saturday, 27 September 2008
The Ladies Match Cup, sailed for the fourth time during the Interboot boat show in Friedrichshafen is a grade one event and offers 10.000 Euros prize money. Julie Bossard from France took the top score in the first round robin, while the team of Maria Ramires sailing for Portugal did not make it into the next round robin. Sailing had to be cancelled in the afternoon due to the strong winds.
The sailors of the Ladies Match Cup got a true demonstration of the wind options on Lake Constance on Friday. The north-easterly strengthened up to six Beaufort and made the matches very challenging for the nine international crews taking part in the series.
Race officer Rudi Magg and his team from the Yacht-Club Langenargen started 16 matches in the morning to end the first round robin, but the wind grew stronger during the day and racing was cancelled in the afternoon.
Julie Bossard from France won the first round robin and looked pretty confident for the next races to come: “We are used to a lot of wind and we know the boats from other regattas. I think that gives us a little advantage”, she said with a smile.
For the international crew of helmswoman Maria Ramires, starting for Portugal the series ended on Friday, as she became last and only eight teams continue to sail in the next round robin.
Silke Hahlbrock from Hamburg, Germany ranked fifth in the first round despite going into the series as favourites. “We will start all over tomorrow”, she said in the afternoon.
The Ladies Match race will be decided on Sunday (28. September).
