The ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship was first held in 1999 in Genoa, Italy. Women’s Match Racing will be featured for the first time in the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition.

“New York Yacht Club is looking forward to hosting this important Championship” said Event Chair Susan Daly. “With women’s match racing now in the Olympics, it will be exciting to see the world’s top women sailors in action and to welcome them to Harbour Court.”

Racing will take place in the NYYC’s fleet of 13 Sonars on Narragansett Bay in Newport, Rhode Island.

Newport is famous for its mansions, beaches and sailing activities and played host to the America’s Cup for many years. September can bring a variety of sailing conditions ranging from southerly sea breezes to blustery northwesterlies depending on frontal passages. The water is still warm from the summer and temperatures can range from 55-80o F (13-27o C). Spectators will be able to watch the action from ashore on Goat Island and spectator boats will be available daily.

Twenty of the top women’s match racing teams of four sailors from around the world will be invited to participate in the 2010 Championship. Invited skippers will include the defending champion, Nicky Souter from Australia, as well as top sailors from the ISAF Women’s Match Racing rankings and the ISAF World Cup, and two wild card entries.

The winning team at the 2010 Worlds will be crowned 2010 ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Champions and presented with the ISAF Francoise Pascal Memorial – Women’s Match Racing World Championship Trophy. The trophy is named in honour of the late Francoise Pascal, a former Vice-President of the Federation Francaise de Voile and a hugely influential figure in the growth of women’s match racing.

The first, second and third place overall team will receive ISAF Gold, Silver and Bronze medals respectively. In addition, the first-placed skipper following the round robin will be presented with the ISAF Nucci Novi Cepellini Memorial Trophy.
