DETROIT -- (September 9, 2007) –
Its all over - and wow what a finish.
The semi finals went off smoothly, but surprisingly. Anna Tunnicliffe picked Katy Lovell as her semi final opponent. Deb Capozzi and Liz Baylis were in the other semi final match. The rest of the field also sailed a consolation round, with Charlie Arms and Rebecca Beard sailing a one race sail-off for 5th and 6th place, Liz Hjorth and Lauren Knoles a one race sail-off for 7th and 8th, and Angela Scheibner, Sue McDowell and Kathy Lundeen sailing a single round robin for 9th, 10th and 11th.
In the consolation round, Arms defeated Beard, Knoles defeated Hjorth, and Scheibner, McDowell and Lundeen each won a match, to put the tie-breaker into play, with McDowell taking 9th, Knoles 10th, and Scheibner 11th.
In the semi finals Tunnicliffe and Lovell slugged it out, and Lovell was the first to defeat Tunnicliffe this week – and she did so twice, to move forward to the finals, with Tunnicliffe slated for the petit-finals.
In the other semi final, Baylis and Capozzi split their first two matches, setting up the third and decisive match between the two. Baylis lead at the top mark with Capozzi hot on her heels, but Capozzi fouled Baylis, picking up a penalty and sealing the result of the match. Baylis moved on to the finals, setting up the two Olympic hopefuls in the petit-finals.
The petit-finals were great matches. Capozzi and Tunnicliffe went at each other from the entry trading tacks and gybes all around the race course in both of their matches. In the first, Capozzi nipped Tunnicliffe at the wire, and then a little more comfortably in the second, Capozzi took Tunnicliffe in 2 straight matches.
In the finals, Baylis and Lovell went to 3 - and the rubber match was a real nail biter.
Baylis had Lovell trapped out on the left side in the pre-start, but Lovell was able to sneak over top to get out of the trap and get back to the line about even with Baylis. Off they went, with Baylis further left going upwind. The left paid, and Baylis rounded clear ahead by about 10 boat lengths.
Down the run, Baylis went left (right upwind), and Lovell gybed out. Baylis rounded well ahead, but slide around the mark some in the current. Lovell had a picture perfect rounding in the current, and headed up well inside Baylis.
As they headed up the leg, Baylis got knocked and Lovell lifted with more pressure, when Baylis tacked back, she had to duck Lovell. Lovell traded side with Baylis, and got a lot of pressure and a lift as she headed back into the mark. Lovell lead around the mark by about 10-15 boat lengths.
Lovell gybed immediately after the mark, and when Baylis got around, she stayed to the left side (right upwind). Baylis stayed in pressure that was a big knock, while Lovell sailed in a light spot.
Lovell gybed back towards the mark, and it was a dead heat. Baylis was able to sail deep with pressure, and the two boats converged on the finish line.
The two boats went across with Baylis at the boat, and Lovell at the pin - gun went off, and both skippers, all the spectators and the Umpires spun to see what color flag was flown from the RC boat, as no one other than the RC could tell -
YELLOW - Baylis and the SFWMRT win their second U.S. Womens Match Racing Championship.
