Camilla Ulrikkeholm superior in Lysekil Women’s Match
She ended in top of the first round-robin. She went undefeated through the quarterfinals as well as the semi-finals. At last she also won the final in three straight matches against Nicole Souter, Australia. Camilla Ulrikkeholm from the Royal Danish Yacht Club in Skovshoved is the superior winner of Lysekil Women’s Match 2011, in her fifth competition in the Swedish event:
– It wasn’t as easy as the results may show. We won the races on better boat handling when there was more wind, Camilla laughs.
The thousands of spectators on the cliffs surrounding the race area, in Lysekil on the Swedish west coast, can really agree that Souter wasn’t an easy catch for Ulrikkeholm. The world champion from the 2009 races in the same waters put up some excellent fights in all of the three final matches, and the crowd could see a lot of examples on challenging manoeuvres and really good crew work from both boats:
– We made some silly mistakes when we were ahead, and you can’t afford that when meeting a competitor as Ulrikkeholm, Souter admits.
– I won here two years ago and my intention is to come back and do it again in another two years. Next year I’m going to sail match racing in the Olympics, so then I’m not available for this event, she smiles.
In her semi-final Trine Abrahamsen from Denmark forced Nicole Souter to five matches, and then she immediately had to race for the bronze position against Stephanie Roble, Chicago. Roble instead took advantage of her time to rest after having been defeated by Ulrikkeholm in their semi finals. The American girl secured third place through two straight victories against Abrahamsen:
– This morning was a little shaky, but after the break we could get out there on the water again with clear heads, she comments.
– We were happy that the wind dropped a little bit in the afternoon, because we’re 38 kilos under the weight limit. We are small but fierce, she concludes, giving credits to her crew.
